Issues with Ordinary (Non-SML) Cast Iron Pipes in Building Drainage: The Need for Repair

While cast iron pipes are expected to have a lifespan of up to 100 years, those in millions of homes in regions like Southern Florida have failed in as little as 25 years. The reasons for this accelerated degradation are weather conditions and environmental factors. Repairing these pipes can be very costly, sometimes reaching tens of thousands of dollars, with some insurance companies declining to cover the costs, leaving many homeowners unprepared for the expense.

Why do pipes fail so much sooner in homes built in Southern Florida compared to other regions? A significant factor is that these pipes are uncoated and have rough interiors, leading to the accumulation of fibrous materials like toilet paper, which causes blockages over time. Moreover, the frequent use of harsh chemical cleaners can accelerate the corrosion of metal pipes. Additionally, the corrosive nature of Florida’s water and soil contributes to pipe failure. As plumber Jack Ragan notes, “When sewer gases and water corrode from the inside, the exterior also begins to corrode,” creating a “double whammy” that leads to effluent flowing into areas where it shouldn’t.

In contrast, SML cast iron drainage pipes that meet EN877 standards offer improved protection against these issues. These pipes have epoxy resin coatings on the inner walls, providing a smooth surface that prevents scaling and corrosion. The outer wall is treated with anti-rust paint, ensuring better resistance to environmental moisture and corrosive conditions. This combination of inner and outer coatings gives SML pipes a longer lifespan and a more reliable performance in challenging conditions, making them a more durable and cost-effective solution for building drainage systems.
