What updates does EN 877:2021 have on BS EN 877:1999

EN877 standard is the characteristics and test methods of cast iron pipe systems and fittings for engineering drainage. EN877:2021 is a further revision and optimization based on EN877:1999. The nominal diameter range covered is from DN 40 to DN 600 (inclusive), and cast iron includes gray cast iron and ductile iron.

Material requirements are more extensive and precise:
  1.BS EN 877:1999+A1:2006: Focuses primarily on grey cast iron.

  2. EN 877:2021: Explicitly covers two materials: grey cast iron and ductile iron. The chemical composition, mechanical properties (such as tensile strength, elongation), metallographic structure and other requirements of these two materials are specified in more detail and precision (referenced to newer material standards such as EN 1561, EN 1563). This provides greater flexibility in material selection and ensures the compatibility and performance of ductile iron products.

Connection methods are more modern and diverse:
  1.BS EN 877:1999+A1:2006: Mainly focuses on traditional socket joints (sealed with rubber seals or lead/caulking compounds).

  2. EN877:2021: Significantly expands the connection methods, explicitly including: Socket joints (still the core). Mechanical joints (pipe coupling, clamp, etc.). Welded joints. Flange jointsThe dimensions, tolerances, performance requirements and test methods for each connection type are specified in more detail. This reflects the diversified development of connection technology in the market.

EN877 2021 for cast iron joints

More stringent and comprehensive performance requirements, DINSEN will continue to update relevant content.:
  1.Increased watertightness test pressure: The new standard requires higher test pressures to verify the sealing performance of joints under positive and negative pressure.
  2.Sound insulation becomes a mandatory requirement: This is one of the most significant changes. EN 877:2021 makes laboratory sound insulation testing of pipes and fittings systems mandatory (according to EN 14366) and specifies the minimum sound insulation values that must be achieved (e.g., weighted apparent sound pressure level difference Dn,e,w ≥ 45 dB). BS EN 877:1999 does not have mandatory sound insulation requirements.
  3.Fire resistance: The requirements for fire resistance may be updated or more clearly referenced (such as the EN 1366 series of standards).
  4.Mechanical strength: The mechanical performance requirements for pipes and fittings such as pressure resistance and impact resistance may be adjusted or more precisely defined.
  5.Chemical corrosion resistance: The requirements may be updated or more detailed.

EN 877:2021 is a single integrated standard document with clearer and more modern structure and expression.
