The real difference is microscopic. Grey cast iron contains flake graphite; ductile iron contains spheroidal graphite produced by adding magnesium during casting. Ductile iron delivers ≥ 420 MPa tensile strength with around 10% elongation, versus roughly 150–250 MPa and under 1% for grey cast iron. In the ground that gap decides survival: ductile iron absorbs water hammer, surge pressure and soil settlement that would crack grey iron. In field practice, a ductile pipe can also be deflected or bent at joints without failing, which simplifies alignment in uneven trenches. Standards reveal the intended job. Grey cast iron drainage follows EN 877 or ASTM A888 and suits gravity, non-pressure systems such as building DWV and sewer laterals. Ductile iron follows ISO 2531, EN 545, EN 598 (sewage) or AWWA C151 and is rated in pressure classes K9, K10 and K12 — K9 is the most common for water mains. If a specification mentions a pressure class, you are looking at ductile iron.
4. Joints and Installation
Joints reflect the same divide. Ductile iron uses push-on rubber-gasket joints that self-seal under pressure and install fast, with mechanical, flanged and restrained options for demanding conditions. Cast iron drainage relies on no-hub couplings or hub-and-spigot joints, quick to assemble in vertical stacks. Both work on site; the difference is that ductile joints are engineered to hold pressure, and each type is tested to a different standard.
5. Corrosion Protection and Service Life
Both pipes are coated — for different reasons. Ductile iron typically carries an external zinc layer plus bitumen finish and an internal cement mortar lining approved for potable water; installed correctly, service life reaches 50–100 years. Cast iron drainage uses enamel, epoxy or bitumen coatings suited to wastewater. Coating quality decides real-world longevity, another reason to buy from a manufacturer with controlled production.

Grey cast iron is cheaper per meter, and that is correct economics: gravity drainage does not need pressure-grade material. Ductile iron costs more upfront but can win on total cost of ownership through lower failure and repair rates in pressurized service. Never compare price alone — compare what the pipe must do, where it will sit, and for how long.
