EN 877 is the core European standard for cast iron drainage systems in buildings, and its 2010 revision introduced tighter quality controls that international buyers should understand before ordering.
What changed in EN 877:2010. Wall thickness must be measured with ball-ended calipers at a minimum of two diametrically opposed positions on each end of pipes and fittings, accurate to 0.1 mm; calibrated ultrasonic gauges may supplement readings along the barrel. Where the coating exceeds 400 μm, the specified minimum wall thickness must increase by the excess amount. Reduced thickness — up to 1 mm below the minimum — is permitted only by agreement between supplier and purchaser, and requires dedicated marking plus full re-verification of every performance requirement, with acoustic and fire performance tested separately.
The lightweight trend. PAM Building’s Agilium, a lightweight cast iron wastewater drainage range, is roughly 30% lighter than conventional products and cuts production CO₂ emissions by about 20%. Made of 99% recycled and fully recyclable material, it achieves A1 fire classification, up to 240 minutes’ fire protection in specific configurations, and low noise levels (46 dB(A) airborne, 13 dB(A) structure-borne at 2 L/s). Yet although the standard defines testing and marking for reduced-wall products, dedicated type-testing remains immature in the market — a hidden risk for project schedules.
