SML Pipe vs Hubless Cast Iron Pipe: The Complete Comparison Guide

What Is an SML Pipe?

SML is the European designation for a socketless, plain-ended grey cast iron drainage pipe produced to EN877. The letters stand for the German classification of the mechanical joint system (Steck–Muffen–Lose / socketless mechanical, loose coupling). The pipe itself has no bell or hub; two plain ends are connected with an external stainless steel clamp coupling that contains an EPDM rubber gasket.

  • Standard: EN 877:2021
  • Material: Grey cast iron with internal and external corrosion-resistant coatings (typically epoxy)
  • Sizes: DN50 – DN300+ (2″–12″+ equivalent)
  • Joint: Restrained stainless steel mechanical couplings
  • Markets: Europe, Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and projects specifying European plumbing codes

What Is a Hubless Cast Iron Pipe?

“Hubless” (also called no-hub) cast iron pipe is the North American system defined by ASTM A888. Like SML, it is plain-ended and joined with an external coupling — the no-hub coupling — which uses a neoprene/EPDM sleeve and a stainless steel shield band. The defining feature is the absence of a bell (hub) at one end, allowing fast, flexible assembly.

  • Standard: ASTM A888
  • Material: grey cast iron, single or double thickness, with protective coatings
  • Sizes: imperial 1.5″ – 15″ (NPS)
  • Joint: no-hub (NH) couplings, shielded or unshielded
  • Markets: United States, Canada, and projects following UPC / IPC codes

Key Differences Explained

1. Standards & Approvals

The single most important difference is the standard. SML pipe is certified to EN 877 and accepted under European and many Asian/Middle Eastern codes. Hubless pipe is certified to ASTM A888 and accepted under US model codes (UPC, IPC). A project’s local authority usually dictates which one you must use — they are not automatically interchangeable on a job that requires a specific listing.

2. Coupling Design

Both systems use external couplings, but the geometry and approval differ. SML couplings are sized to EN 877 pipe OD and are often “restrained” (they resist axial pull-out). NH couplings are sized to ASTM A888 pipe OD and rely on the shield band for joint integrity. Mixing SML pipe with NH couplings is not recommended because outside diameters differ.

3. Dimensions: Metric vs Imperial

SML uses metric diameters (DN50, DN70, DN100, DN150…). Hubless uses imperial sizes (2″, 3″, 4″, 6″…). Even where the “nominal” size looks similar, the actual outside diameter and wall thickness can vary — always verify the spec sheet before ordering.

4. Acoustic & Fire Performance

Both deliver the signature cast iron benefits: low noise (high density dampens water flow) and superior fire safety (non-combustible, no toxic fumes). For high-rise residential or hotel projects where sound matters, either system outperforms PVC — the choice between them is driven by code, not by acoustic difference.

5. Cost & Availability

Pricing depends far more on coatings, quantities, and logistics than on SML-vs-hubless itself. Sourcing directly from a cast iron pipe manufacturer China typically lowers landed cost versus regional distributors, provided the mill can supply the correct standard (EN877 or ASTM A888) with valid third-party certification.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Building in Europe, the Gulf, or Asia with EN-compliant specs? → Choose SML (EN 877).
  • Building in the US/Canada under UPC/IPC? → Choose hubless (ASTM A888).
  • Retrofit / mixed inventory? → Standardize on one system to simplify couplings and spares.
  • Noise-critical high-rise? → Either works; pair with certified couplings and proper hanger spacing.
