Understanding Internal and External Drainage Systems

Internal drainage and external drainage are two different ways we deal with rainwater from a building’s roof.

Internal drainage means we manage the water inside the building. This is useful for places where it’s hard to put gutters on the outside, like buildings with lots of angles or unique shapes. For example, imagine a building with a cool rooftop garden or a patio with nooks and crannies where water might collect. Internal drainage makes sure this water doesn’t cause any problems inside. It’s commonly used in multi-span industrial plants and buildings with complicated roof designs, like shell-shaped roofs or those with skylights.

External drainage, on the other hand, is all about guiding the water away from the outside walls of the building. This system uses gutters placed along the roof’s edge to catch the rainwater. Then, the water flows into buckets attached to the outer walls. From there, it travels down pipes and away from the building. This setup is great for simpler roofs and shorter buildings where it’s easier to install gutters on the outside. It’s commonly seen in buildings with spans of up to 100 meters.

Both internal and external drainage methods are important for keeping buildings safe from water damage. Whether it’s keeping the inside dry or making sure water doesn’t pool around the outside, these systems help us manage rainwater effectively.
