DINSEN Morning Session: Advancing EN545 Standard Expertise

The morning sun streamed into the DINSEN conference room, signaling the arrival of the weekly technical morning meeting. This meeting, following last week’s in-depth study of the European drinking water pipe standard EN545, focused on several key and practical technical topics, setting the stage for a productive morning filled with knowledge and reflection.

At the outset, Vincent (DINSEN Quality Engineer) reviewed last week’s key points: the definition of ovality in ductile iron pipes and its importance to pipe installation and leak-tightness. This session delved deeper into practical operations, detailing the ovality calculation formula ((maximum outer diameter – minimum outer diameter) / nominal outer diameter × 100%) and standard measurement methods (such as using a pi ruler or special calipers to measure multiple points at specific locations on the pipe). During the discussion, a colleague raised the question of how to quickly determine whether ovality is within the standard tolerance in practice.

The meeting then moved on to a systematic study of the core parameters of ductile iron pipes. Quality inspector Vincent used clear diagrams to explain the definitions and selection principles of pipe pressure classes (PN, such as PN10, PN16, and PN25) and nominal diameters (DN) in the EN545 standard. He focused on differentiating the concepts and application scenarios of K-class (wall thickness classes, such as K8, K9, and K10, representing the wall thickness coefficient) and C-class (cement lining classes, such as C25 and C40, representing the thickness and properties of the lining). Sales colleagues enthusiastically discussed the applicable engineering applications for different grade combinations, drawing on common customer inquiries. Vincent provided examples, providing a deeper understanding of product selection.

For rare defects that may occur in pipes during the casting process, the EN545 standard allows for repair under strict conditions. Vincent detailed the applicable defect types for weld repair, preheating requirements, welding consumables (specialized ductile iron welding rods), and the stringent post-weld treatment (heat holding and slow cooling) and inspection procedures (non-destructive testing). He emphasized that welding repair is a rigorous process that must be performed by qualified welders and undergo 100% quality verification to ensure that the repaired pipe performance fully meets standard requirements. This session sparked a lively discussion among colleagues in the technical department, who exchanged views on the pros and cons of different repair methods.

The final session focused on “Vascular Connectors”—pipe fittings. Vincent systematically introduced several key joint types commonly found in the EN545 standard:

Coupling (flexible clamp): The most commonly used flexible connection method, easy to install, and allowing for a certain degree of deflection and displacement.

Flanged Adapter: Used for rigid connections to valves, pumps, or other flanged equipment, with strong standardization and easy assembly and disassembly.

Dismantling Joint: A special long sleeve flange joint designed with adjustable clearance, facilitating pipe installation, maintenance, and disassembly, particularly in areas with limited space.

Using actual images and installation examples, Vincent vividly explained the structural characteristics, applicable operating conditions, and key installation points of each joint. During the meeting, many colleagues actively raised questions, especially regarding connector selection under different geological conditions. Vincent patiently and professionally answered each question.

The brief 30-minute morning meeting was enriching and lively. Quality Inspector Vincent, with his solid professional knowledge and patient responses, provided a high-quality learning experience for all colleagues. This continuous internal learning not only strengthens the DINSEN team’s product knowledge of international standards but also enhances the professionalism of everyone involved in every aspect of the process, from production and quality inspection to sales.

We firmly believe that only by thoroughly understanding our products can we provide our customers with more professional and accurate advice and services, helping them choose the most appropriate, cost-effective, and reliable piping solutions. Every day of learning is dedicated to better serving our customers. The DINSEN team is always on the journey!
